An "Arts & Craps" Kind Of Day

The weather in MN today was just plain yucky. It rained all day and reached a balmy 43 degrees. And I heard that flurries are possibly in our forecast for later in the week. :O I finally had to give the oven a rest (it was heating up the main level of the house the past few mornings) and actually turn on the furnace. Those of us that experience four seasons can probably relate to the fact that turning on the furnace for the first time each year requires a certain mindset. You have to resign yourself to the fact that summer is definitely over, and winter isn't far off. So on days like this I sometimes struggle to find ways to keep the kiddos occupied. Thankfully, all of my children enjoy some aspect of crafting, which my little guy refers to as "Arts & Craps". =) Currently, they love using my decorative punches and gluing them to sheets of paper, followed closely by painting with watercolors or coloring (especially with markers). Of course, there's also puzzles, games and books. And if I'm really desperate, I haul out our inflatable jumping castle, move some furniture, blow it up and let 'em have at it. What are some of your kids' favorite activities on a rainy day?

  1. Today was the first day of "cold" we had this fall so I totally know what you mean.

My kids like arts and crafts as well so that keeps them occupied a lot, but they will also play school or house or one of those games. We try to break out the board games also.

  2. When my son was little we had indoor sets of bowling, basket ball and a "Nurf" football. He didn't like to sit still for crafts or board games.

  3. Watching movies, making forts with blankets, board games and hide and seek. If I get desperate, I will pull out the playdough, LOL!

My oldest son is happy though, he claims that he loves to play soccer when it is raining...!

oh, and this past spring, i had the chance to go to the scholastic warehouse book sale and i picked up a huge stack of books...the kids knew that if it was a rainy day, they'd get a new book :)

  6. My son loves to make comic books. He makes multiple drawings and then searches for the stapler to make his book. He likes to do crafts sometimes. Mostly he will play with his star wars guys or I will built him a fort (he has this magnetic mega fort) and he will bring all of his toys out and have a blast for hours. Play doh is only brought out on days when nothing else seems to keep his attention. Only because I really dispise cleaning up after a play doh day. I will find little pieces of the stuff for days. How does the playdoh get into the bathroom anyway?

  7. My kids always love a game of hide-n-seek and beeing chased around the house but not a good idea if you want them to occupy themselves. It gets tiring after one round.
