How many cards can you get from a kit?!

Here is my question to you....or perhaps a challenge!

How many cards can you get from a kit?!

I was playing with the BoBunny Splendor papers from the January kit and couldn't stop making cards! Here are a few examples. I'd love to see any cards you have made recently.

A super quick Thank You card, I didn't mat the tag sticker, I cheated by using a thick black marker to tracer around the edge. Shhh! Our secret!
Photobucket

This one is my favorite card, the heart is a doo-dad off of a gift that my sister gave at her wedding dinner.
Photobucket

Super quick:
Photobucket

Can you guess which past kit the chipboard "beautiful" is from?!!
Photobucket

Another one of my favorites, I used a pin to secure the ribbon inside the flower:
Photobucket

Isn't it amazing how many quick and easy cards you can make!

For someone who just bought a home:

Last but not least:

Phew....that's a lot of cards from just one kit and I still have paper left over to do more. Who knew you could stretch a kit out so much! Please post a comment with a link to your cards so we all can take a look!

Thanks for looking!

My Bargain Basement Project

I admit it. I'm a bargain shopper. I have a hard time plunking down the cash for many of the latest/greatest scrapbooking products out there. It's not that I don't like these innovative products, I just feel that they are significantly overpriced. That's the finance person in me.

Take the Clip-It-Up. Wonderful concept, really. All your drool-worthy scrapbook products displayed at your fingertips in an organized manner. I even priced this product. If I purchased the base unit, then the smaller top rack, the clips, and maybe even a pack or two of the plastic sleeves for some of my smaller things, we're talking well over $100. No way, not for me! So I turned to the internet. Google is like the best invention ever! I simply searched on homemade Clip-It-Ups and voila! Tons of hits. And some really creative, budget-friendly ideas!

But with every homemade project, I think you need to make it work for you. In my case, I don't have a lot of counterspace, so the stand idea doesn't really work. But I do have this area between the underside of my cabinets and the ledge in my room. It seems like it's almost unusable space, but those are the areas where you can get really creative!

One evening, while working on the computer, I was looking at the space, and the idea just came to me! The next day, I rushed out to the hardware store and Home Depot. For around $2.50 - $5.00 you can purchase a 3/16" x 48" metal rod (like a dowel rod, but metal). Like this: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3032/2432630011_85cd7de857.jpg NOTE: The 1/4" rod will also work, it's thicker and will be sturdier, but too wide for the clips to hook on. You'd have to slide them on from the end each time you wanted to add a clip.

I'm still debating whether we will drill out a "cradle" on the underside of the cabinet (there is about a 1" lip there) for the rod to set in, or if I will just use screw hooks like this: http://www.mutualscrew.com/subcategories.php?pid=3502 If I go the way of the screw hook, I will need to devise a "stopper" of some sort for the end of the rod, so that my product doesn't slide off the ends. Also, we may need to saw the metal rod to fit the space.

As for the clips, I 've seen a number of ideas on the internet, from safety pins and paper clips with washers, but I like the original clips from Clip-It-Up. Archivers sells a package of 25 clips for $6.99. However, one of the ladies who made her own, found the same exact clip at Joann's (a package of 21 clips for $3.99)! See here: http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat1937&PRODID=prd53257&source=search/

I believe I can make this entire project for under $20! And that just makes me smile! :) I will be sure to post pictures of my finished project as soon as we get to it (it's #964 on the mile-long to-do list ;))

Please feel free to post your ideas for any budget-friendly scrapbook projects!

Organizing Your Digital Photos

Confession: I took 288 pictures in December. No, wait. There's still 26 pictures in memory card #2, so make that 314. But I will forgive myself. It was, after all, the season for picture taking.

But who am I kidding? The other months are usually not that much different. This has been one problem I've had to deal with since I've gone digital. Because it's so easy to take 100 pictures knowing I can easily weed them out later and not spend unnecessary $$$ getting everything printed, I tend to get click happy. So what's a click happy gal to do? ORGANIZE.

Here's what I do with my digital photos.
1. Whenever possible, I delete bad pictures (as when someone blinked) right on my digital camera.
2. As soon as I can, I upload all my pictures onto my computer, choosing the option to clear my memory card as soon as the upload is done, so the card is cocked and loaded for the next photo op.
3. If I have time, I will make another quick scan of the uploaded pictures and delete more bad ones.
4. I then upload to an online site. I use Smugmug for a yearly fee, but many online photo service stores will let you store pictures on their site for free so long as you use their services. At the online site, I create a folder for each year+month.
5. Usually at the beginning of each month, I allot time to go through the pictures and decide which ones to print, editing when necessary. One reason I like using Smugmug, if I mess up during editing, I can always download the original with no additional charge.
6. Soon after I receive my prints, I copy the pictures to a DVD for additional backup. I use DVDs instead of CDs because DVDs can hold about 4x more.

Just for fun, I made this TSR Gallery project, aptly titled "A House Full of Memories" to house my DVD backups.

Tip: When creating backups, if you use Photoshop Elements you can use the MOVE function which actually deletes the pictures from your computer, leaving only a low resolution copy for viewing in the organizer. This frees up your hard drive for more pictures. Just remember that with the MOVE function, the pictures are deleted so guard your backups well. Whenever you want to edit a picture that has been MOVEd to a "removable media", you will be asked by PSE to re-insert that media (your DVD backup).

Double Sided Patterned Paper

I just want to take this opportunity to talk about how much I LOVE DoUBlE SiDeD PaTTeRneD PaPEr. I mean really this has to be the single greatest invention of all time, well aside from electricity, telephones, plumbing.... you know the REALLY important stuff.

The 3 most important reasons that I love double sided patterned paper are as follows:

1. You get more bang for your $buck$...who doesn't love that, I know my husband appreciates it ;)

2. Double Sided Patterned Paper makes it so much easier to have several color coordinating pieces of patterned paper in one layout, without having to dig through your stash and then contemplate "does this really match that?" (see above layout for example)

3. I love using my left overs to make cards this way it is pretty on the outside AND the inside. Add a small rectangle of solid cardstock to write a message on and BAM you have a card (that one had a little Emeril flavor to it, if ya know what I mean).

I hope you share my affinity for double sided patterned paper and if not please take this opportunity to try it out. I know you won't be disappointed.

Favorite products

What is your favorite product? The one you use time and time again? For me it is without a doubt string. I love it for so many different reasons and use it on almost if not every layout/card I make. It comes in every color imaginable, it is inexpensive and a little goes a long way.

I use string to add finishing touches to almost all of my layouts. I tie it around pictures, chipboard letters in my titles, random pieces of cardstock or embellishments. I use it to hand stitch boarders or to copy designs from patterned paper. Here are a few examples of just that.

Tip: The colors I use the most I buy in big rolls at the craft store. I think they are around 2-3 dollars and you get tons of string. Even as much as I use it, I never seem to run out when I buy it like this.

Favorite Tool

We all have them, those tools we use again and again. I have a few of them but one of my favorite, least expensive tools is my circle punch. I use the thing so often it hardly ever gets put away. It seems to sit at the corner of my scrap desk always tempting me to grab and use it one more time. Some of my favorite uses for it are; backgrounds for titles, to make big scalloped boarders along the edge of a paper( I just punch my circles cut them in half and tuck them under another piece of paper),punch holes in papers and use the negative space for embellishments and my current favorite to make flower cards. Here is an example of just that. I grab a piece of leftover cardstock, fold it in half, trace a circle over top with a tiny bit hanging off the edge for the card fold then I punch circles from leftover scraps of paper and use them around the edges.

Letter Sticker Organization

I am always in search of new and better ways to organize my scrapbook products.  With the new year here, I promised myself that I would to get into my scraproom and make better sense of what is there.  More recently, I was flipping through the October issue of Creating Keepsakes magazine and got a glimpse of designer Kelly Purkey's scraproom.  I noticed she used the classic book rings to organize some her supplies.  It was so easy, so simple and so ingenious, I just had to try it!  She simply put the ring through the packaging holes of the supplies and voila...immediate organization! I instantly used this tip for my plethora of letter stickers. :)  I even took it a step further and hung it on hook for storage.  This way, I can flip through the stickers quickly and easily in order to find what I are looking for. :)

I hope you find this tip as helpful as I did!  Happy organizing! :)

Welcome our newest Message Board Moderator, Angela Loughridge!

I am excited to announce the newest addition to our ScrapRoom Message Board Moderating Team... Angela Loughridge! We will miss having Teressa as one of our board moderators, as she has been a helpful friend to everyone since we opened the board three years ago. And, while Teressa promised to still hang out with us on the message board when she gets the chance, we knew we needed to fill her position.

Angela has been on the boards for several years now, and she has been doing so many "Moderator Duties" even without the title for a long time - answering questions, welcoming members, opening and participating in discussions - we thought it was time to just make it official and give her the title. :) Please join me in welcoming her on the message board in her new "official" capacity!

A little bit about Angela!
One thing I'd grab if my house were on fire: As long as my kids and hubby are safe I would have to grab my camera for sure
One thing I wish I could throw away: My stack of my husbands muscle magazines that just keeps growing and growing
One thing I'll never, ever throw away: Cards and letters that my hubby and kids has given me
Something I lost and still miss: My younger sister
Something I've kept since childhood: All of my awards from school
A food item I never run out of: That would definetly be brown-sugar cinnamon and strawberry pop tarts. If we don't have these in the house the kids act like there is nothing here to eat.
A household brand I'm very loyal to: Gain and Downy
Something I sleep with every night: The fan! If it isn't on I can't sleep.
One thing that's on my wish list: I really want the Wii Fit, which seems to be nowhere right now.
Something I take with me wherever I go: My cell phone and purse
Something that makes me smile when I see it: When my kids are watching a movie and just belt out a big laugh I can't help but smile.
Something my children fight over: They are constantly fighting over who rides in the front seat of the car.
Something I hate to clean: That would be the bathroom
Something I show off when people visit: I don't usually show off anything, but if someone asks I show them my scrapbooks.
Something I hide when people visit: My bedroom
Something I'm embarrassed to admit I like: With having 3 kids I am officially addicted to watching the shows on Disney Channel, like iCarly and The Suite Life. I know I am way to old but they are fun to watch.
Something I collect: I love to collect Precious Moments figurines.
Something I avoid at all costs: Brussel Sprouts! YUCK
Something that reminds me of my mother: The countless afghans we have around our house. She loves crocheting.
The best gift I've ever received: Definitely my kids and hubby.

ECONOMY-BUSTING KITS PROGRAM STARTING JANUARY 19TH

Happy New Year! Well, today is the 8th, and 2009 is well underway! And since January is the month for “new beginnings,” we thought we’d take advantage of a brand new year to introduce our brand new “ECONOMY-BUSTING KITS”. If you’re like me, you’re always looking for good deals on great products, and our new “ECONOMY-BUSTING KITS” will offer you fabulous deals on great scrappin' supplies. We’ve been on the lookout for super-amazing deals from our manufacturers, and when we get a great deal, we’re going to pass that savings on to you!

These “ECONOMY-BUSTING KITS” will be released every two weeks in the ScrapRoom Store Preorder Forum on our message board, beginning Monday, January 19th at 10:00 p.m. CST. Quantities will be limited to the stock that we have on hand.

Here is how it will work:
1.) Every other Monday, a new “ECONOMY-BUSTING KIT” will be revealed on the message board in the ScrapRoom Store Preorder forum at 10:00 p.m. CST.

2.) To order that week’s kit, simply e-mail us at admin@scrap-room.com. We will process orders in the order that we receive them in our inbox.

3.) “ECONOMY-BUSTING KITS” must be paid for at the time that the order is placed, BUT the best part is that we will ship them with your next regular ScrapRoom shipment, so you’ll only have to pay one shipping charge each month – (another way to save money – combined shipping)!

So, be sure to mark your calendar for 10:00 p.m. CST on January 19th for our first “ECONOMY-BUSTING” reveal. We’ve got some really great (and CHEAP) kits in store for you!

And, because a post without a photo is not much fun, everyone here at The ScrapRoom would like to wish you and your family a beautiful 2009!

2008 review layout

I created this photo collage using the Picasa 3 software. I use Picasa to organize and print my photos at home. You can find a free download of the software here. It was so hard to choose which photos to use! I am going to do a separate collage page for each kid - trying to use a favorite photo from each month. Pick out your favorite photos from the year and create one of these layouts too! Brenda :)
