What do you do with left over kits (besides build your stash!)....make cards!
Here is a card sketch to try out.
Photobucket

Here is an example:
Photobucket
To create this smooth (non lumpy) card, I only used the patterned papers from the kit. Instead of ribbon, I used a strip of decorative paper. Matting was done using the back sides and the arrow/boy girl were cut from the patterned paper. Have fun and share a smile, send a card out today!

We've discussed camera lenses, how about must-have camera accessories?

I was just reading an online article the other day, from a former (or maybe current) Memory Maker Master (I don't recall exactly). She was talking about a few of her favorite (and inexpensive) camera accessories. She went on to discuss this little doo-dad - a Gary Fong Flash Diffuser (aka "puffer"). http://www.amazon.com/Gary-Fong-Puffer-Flash-Diffuser/dp/B0011000R6 I thought to myself that this gizmo might just be the answer to my photography prayers. Because my pocketbook knows I can't afford a high-end lens or a bounce flash right now. But $25 I can do. I'll see if I can scare up a link to that article because the sample photos using this thing were pretty amazing IMO. Ah, here we go: http://http//www.memorymakersmagazine.com/masters/2008/09/25/3+Little+Photography+Tools.aspx

So tell me about some of your favorite or must-have camera accessories, and include links if possible.

An "Arts & Craps" Kind Of Day

The weather in MN today was just plain yucky. It rained all day and reached a balmy 43 degrees. And I heard that flurries are possibly in our forecast for later in the week. :O I finally had to give the oven a rest (it was heating up the main level of the house the past few mornings) and actually turn on the furnace. Those of us that experience four seasons can probably relate to the fact that turning on the furnace for the first time each year requires a certain mindset. You have to resign yourself to the fact that summer is definitely over, and winter isn't far off. So on days like this I sometimes struggle to find ways to keep the kiddos occupied. Thankfully, all of my children enjoy some aspect of crafting, which my little guy refers to as "Arts & Craps". =) Currently, they love using my decorative punches and gluing them to sheets of paper, followed closely by painting with watercolors or coloring (especially with markers). Of course, there's also puzzles, games and books. And if I'm really desperate, I haul out our inflatable jumping castle, move some furniture, blow it up and let 'em have at it. What are some of your kids' favorite activities on a rainy day?

Another Challenge - Give it the ol' *collage* try!

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!!! Andipan was brave enough to take my collage challenge and her LO is fabulous! Andrea, I need to get some personal info from you so that Tammy can send out the prize package with your next kit shipment!!!!! Please e-mail me your full name at jmemprice@charter.net (I'll pm you too). Thanks!

http://s489.photobucket.com/albums/rr255/andipan/?action=view&current=IMG_4071.jpg

If you haven't figured it out already, I like my LO's neat, crisp and tidy. Frankly that whole freestyle movement that rocked the scrapbooking industry awhile back, paralyzed me. I thought it was cool, it was hip, it was trendy......but I couldn't do it. Oh, I tried, but the anal person that lives inside of me wouldn't have it. I will say that the freestyle movement allowed me to break down one wall of my comfort zone - I can now tilt a photo and/or element on my page without flippin' out. :) But still, my eye is drawn to designs that are multi-photo and clean-looking. That's why I love the collage design! Collages allow you to display numerous photos on a layout without it appearing cluttered. And they're completely flexible. If you don't have enough photos, just use the space to add journaling, title or embellishment blocks.

So imagine my excitement when I found Melissa Inman's Quick Collages. Did you see them in Scrapbooks Etc.? I'm not surprised if you didn't. Honestly, they needed to devote a full-page ad to these babies, but you'll only find short sporadic blurbs about them in the mag. They're free downloadable templates for use in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements! And now they've added downloadable photo card collages! You could easily whip up your own Christmas cards this year! Here's the link:

http://www.scrapbooksetc.com/quick-collage/index.html

My October recipe card is an example of a Quick Collage in action. Now, normally I do try to create "original" designs for my recipe cards, but I was totally chomping at the bit to use the templates, and I knew that I had to tell you all about them on the blog! I really love how this layout turned out and it was super EASY!

That brings us to the challenge. Follow the link and download a template (or two.....or 20) and create a LO using your collage of choice. The LO can be one or two pages.....whatever you want! I'll give everyone one week to create a layout (Tuesday, Oct. 28th, 12:00 midnight CST). Post a link to your LO in the comments section and maybe include which collage design you used (I used #102). A random winner will be chosen from the participants on the morning of Wednesday, October 29th to win this awesome prize!

I'll give you 5 days (until midnight central time on Saturday, October 25) to post your comment, and from that pool of comments I'll draw a name Sunday morning. I'll update this blog entry with the winner's name Sunday.

Think outside the box.

The 12x12 box, that is.

Here is another reason why I'm a D-ring convert. My kid's egg hunting party pictures had a lot of tiny little stories I wanted to capture, which proved to be too challenging, too busy to cram into a regular 12x12 layout. Instead, I used a photo sleeve refill made for 12x12 D-rings. I love how, as 4x6 mini layouts, I'm able to relive those small precious moments of the day. But by using the same paper background (from May 2008 FOTM kit), I achieved cohesiveness and it still feels like one single LO.

And here's how I cut my 4x6 backgrounds. I used scrap blue paper to form mats. I hope you can use this idea!

Birthday Donuts

Here is another little family traditon we have.

We always have donuts to start off Birthday days.

The kids really look forward to this. They get to go to the donut store and pick them out .

With this layout I went big time on the theme. I did the circle for the shape of the donut and then added sprinkles with jewles and even cut out the center.

Thanks for looking guys :)

Late to the party :)

ETA Thanks for sharing al your great traditions. They were so much fun to read.

Here is the winner

All the girls in our family go shopping for new Christmas ornaments the day after Thanksgiving. We have lunch out while we're shopping.
October 16, 2008 7:30 AM

Erin email me your address at shanbrouwer@gmail.com and I will get your information to Tammy for the prize.

Sorry it has been quite around here...seems like I am always late to the party!

Time just has a way of getting away from me :)

Speaking of time, I was in Target yesterday and they had CHRISTMAS stuff out! Yes, Christmas! I was amazed. I do have to say I love this time of year. The Holiday season always brings me such joy. As I started thinking about the holidays and family time I started thinking of traditions. We have a few in our family that we do around Christmas time. One of our Christmas traditions is that the year that our children learn to read we buy them their very own Bible for Christmas and they get to help read the Christmas story on Christmas eve to the entire family - it is so fun to watch how much it means to them.

I would love to hear what traditions you have. They can be any traditions, not just holiday ones. I will post a layout latter about one of our non-holiday tradtions.
Post here to be entered into a drawling for a fun prize (The picture of it is above). You have until Friday at midnight to post. I will draw a winner on Sat. morning.

All prizes given away on our ScrapRoom Blog will ship out with our next monthly mailing. If you are a ScrapRoom Café Club member, then your prize will ship along with your next monthly kit shipment. Let's talk lenses!

I love photography! It has always been a passion of mine, ever since I was a child. I am far from a pro so I continue to learn new things about the art every day! I have several lenses but love the 18-135 mm lens and keep it on my camera most of the time. I find that is meets my everyday photography needs. However, I am always looking to acquire a new lens. I keep hinting to my dh that I would REALLY like a new lens...possible a macro. :) Wonder how good he is at taking hints? lol! Anyway,...I would love to know what your favorite lens is and why. There is a ton of literature out there on lenses but I want to hear from your experience. Anyway, one can never have too many lens, right? :)

Who is up for a challenge?

Every now and again, I get into a scrapbooking slump. I drives me bonkers when all my pages begin to look the same to me. So, in order to remove myself from my comfort zone, which can be scary, I join a good ole' scrapbooking challenge. I find that this gets my creative juices flowing and forces me to think outside the box. I even believe that some of my best pages come out of these challenges. :) So, for those who are on the daring side and want to try something new, this challenge may just push you to new limits. :)

So, for this challenge, I would love to see you to create a layout with the following:

1. A base cardstock of black, white or kraft...my personal favorite :)
2. Should be 8 1/2 x 11 or 6 x 12.
3. A bird on it.
4. Stitching on you page, hand or machine.
6. Paint on your layout. It doesn't matter how you use it but it must be there.
7. Use only 1 photo.
8. You MUST have fun!

You will have 1 week to create your layout. All you need to do is post me a link to your page in the comment section. The winner will be chosen on Thursday, October 16th. Here is what one very lucky person will win...

I was so inspired that I created my own page! I can never pass up a good challenge! :)

Can't wait to see what you come up with! :)

“All prizes given away on our ScrapRoom Blog will ship out with our next monthly mailing. If you are a ScrapRoom Café Club member, then your prize will ship along with your next monthly kit shipment. ETA...the winners are Nicole a.k.a. Perky Nihilist and Kim a.k.a. Emmakatt! Congrats, ladies! I loved your pages! One of you will be getting the prize shown and the other prize is not pictured. It will be a surprise! Thanks you so much for playing! :)

Makes me wonder

As I walked in to work yesterday there was a little dried leaf floating up to the top of the building. I stopped to watch it and thought. "Hey that looks really cool by the window like that. How can I make that onto a layout?" Now I am loosing sleep trying to figure this out. So that also makes me wonder.... Do "normal" people see stuff the way we scrapbookers see things? HUMMM....

First for me.

HAPPY ANIVERSARY TSR!

I can't tell you all how excited I am. I actually completed a layout that used a bigger photo than my traditional 4x6 or smaller! I know crazy hun? I have been scrapping for 10 years and have NEVER done a layout with a big photo! I have to say that I was scared out of my mind!
Here is what the moment was like.
I got all the "ingredents" together for the layout, took a deep breath then stared at the photo like it was going to bite me. My DH said to me "what are you scared of it is just a scrapbook page!" WHAT! Just a scrapbook page, has he lost his mind! that is crazy. Just a scrapbook page!

So taking half of his advise I closed my eyes took a deep breath and here you go! I am so happy with it! I love the way the black and white photo looks.

I even got to use some of my new Dew drops. They added the perfict touch to the heart.

So I guess the moral of my weekend is this:

Take a chance you might not know what you will come out with. ( or only take 1/2 of what my husband says and run with it!)

Fall Photo Tips

Fall is definitely my favorite season to take photographs! I just love the colors and the fun events - trips to the pumpkin patch, carving jack-o-lanterns, and dressing up for Halloween. Here are a few things to remember when photographing your family this fall:
1. Try to avoid bright sunlight if possible. I know that this is not always easy to do, but try to find a shaded spot to take photos. Here are some examples - the first 2 were taken with lots of direct sunlight.
The 3rd photo was in the shade - overall the color is not as washed out and the kids aren't squinting.
2. Remember to take some action shots. I really love to take portraits and my kids love to pose for me - so I have to remind myself to capture the action too! A couple examples are below.
3. Make the most of the fall colors for gorgeous backgrounds in your photographs! Also remember to take some photos of your surroundings - the mums, scarecrows, bins of apples, and any signs from the place you are visiting. These can be great additions to your layouts. 4. Remember to hand over the camera and get yourself in a couple photos too! Here is a layout using some of my photos from a recent trip to the pumpkin patch. Notice how I used a mix of portraits and action shots, a photo of the entrance sign, and even one of me with my two youngest girls.

Hope that these were helpful! - Brenda

Patterned Paper Flowers - and another giveaway!

Hello - this is Brenda Carpenter, DT Coordinator for the Scrap-Room! I wanted to share with you how I created the flowers from the Basic Grey Offbeat paper - as seen in this layout-

1. Cut out 2 groups of four petals from the Offbeat patterned paper, leaving a small brown outline around each petal.

2. Layer these petals to form a flower.

3. Use a brad to secure the flower together and adhere to the layout.

Now, I have some FUN flower stamps to giveaway!

*Making Memories “FLOWERS” 11-piece Clear Stamp Set (includes Free Storage Folder)
*Making Memories Large Acrylic Block

Please leave a comment and let me know what your favorite flower is to be entered into the drawing. You have until the end of Sunday(October 5th) to enter.
